Hello,

I need to rename large batches of photo's that are taken on the same day.

The camera I have outputs DSC###.jpg (where ### is numbers), these numbers reset each time I reformat the memory card and do not always run sequentially in groups. Sometimes I have missed numbers for example if I delete something on the camera before downloading the files to the computer. In this case I would have DSC001.jpg and DSC003.jpg where the “2” was deleted in camera.

Anyway, what I am looking to do is have these renamed in large batches. In this case what I want to do is put my own text “eventname” - (number pertaining to photo’s in sequence) – “Photo” (number pertaining to photo’s in sequence) So in this case DSC001.jpg which was taken at a Birthday Party, would become “Birthday Party - 1 - Photo 1.jpg” and DSC003.jpg would become “Birthday Party - 2- Photo 2.jpg” as it is the second photo.

However I want this to be done based on the date and time held in the EXIF data, so that the newly renamed files are properly numerically sequenced in order that the photos were taken.

I can figure out how to add the beginning part but the sequential numbering is baffling me. This tool is very powerful, so I’m sure there is a way to do it, however I cannot figure it out.

Can someone please help me?

Thanks,

Stephen

Yes there is a way to do what you want.

Add the following to the custom renaming creator (do not include the single quotes). Note that you get the same thing if you use the 'predefined renaming feature to insert the command.

Row: 1
Search:
Replace: '*Insert Counter before*Prefix*'

You can add other rows to insert the event name.

Press scan.
IN the preview window that pops up, you will see numbers inserted before all the names. But of course the numbers are the wrong order.
Now right click on one of the column headers of the preview window and choose 'More Columns ...'
check the box for "Image Date Time" and click OK
This will insert the date/time column in the preview window.
Sort the pictures by date time by left clicking on the date time column.

Now press the "redo last scan" button on the preview window.
This will rerun the scan that inserted the sequential numbers and event name but the numbers will be inserted sequentially to the file list that you just sorted.

Hope that helps.

Peter.
