Whew! Just finished renaming some 20GB's of mp3's using only PFrank,
something I'd not dared to do before. I'd like to submit some of the things
that continued to irk me. Maybe we could work out some improvements:

- slow startup

- having to shift my left hand to reach for Ctl+K (or else left pinky+thumb).
Alternatively, I employ Alt+D for the 'Detailed Information' (DI) window. But there are times
when Ctl+R fails to work with this Alt+D. It seems to do the renaming act
by blinking while in reality it doesn't change anything at all. Maybe this should be disabled
under this circumstance. Renaming seems to be actually carried out only if the window is
brought out through the 'Scan' command.
I'd like to have the 'Scan' hotkey easily controllable through the
left-hand fingers. After hitting the Ctl+B (for Browse) it'd be much more quicker
if the left position could be retained. (I almost always use the LCtlr+B for 'Browse'
and I believe this is ditto for most people.) Maybe Ctl+W? This way the left pinky
could act as a pivot, doing away with the need to shift the hand to hit Ctl+K.
It struck me at this point if assigning Ctl+Spacebar as another alternative to
Ctl+R might prove handy. At present Spacebar/Ctl+Spacebar closes the DI window

- having to (1) open a separate window to choose Files/Folders/etc. for the renaming type.
(2) to click on the choice (3) to OK necessarily with the mouse
As I'd requested sometime before, I see no better way out than assigning keyboard shortcuts
or clickable buttons to remedy this slow-downer

- the inability to directly rename current folders, not to talk of files

- the too noticeable flickering of the Detailed Info window whenever I make changes inside it

- the 'Detailed Info' window not scrollable on launch

- and, of course, my limited knowledge of regex.

But the plus points faaaaaaaar outweigh these irksome bits. It's becoming more and more of
a pleasure to use PFrank. Thank you so much. And thanks for the growing forum too.

My responses are inline (prefixed with PF>):

Whew! Just finished renaming some 20GB's of mp3's using only PFrank,
something I'd not dared to do before. I'd like to submit some of the things
that continued to irk me. Maybe we could work out some improvements:

PF> By any chance did you try the mp3 scan? It cleans up alot of inconsistencies and can be combined with regex or pre-defined commands to clean up anything else.

- slow startup

PF> Can't do anything here. It comes up pretty quickly on my relatively old 1700+

PF> That's true. The scan populates the entries used in the preview list.
Then you can rename but the preview window has to be in focus before ctrl-R will take effect. You can also drag names into the preview list. Even a blank list (but there is a minor bug I just found in that you can't rescan; this is fixed now).

I'd like to have the 'Scan' hotkey easily controllable through the
left-hand fingers. After hitting the Ctl+B (for Browse) it'd be much more quicker

It struck me at this point if assigning Ctl+Spacebar as another alternative to
Ctl+R might prove handy. At present Spacebar/Ctl+Spacebar closes the DI window

PF> I'll add ctrl-spacebar hotkeys. The ctrl-space will result in a custom scan on the main window and will result in a rename on the preview window.

PF> Let me think about this.
How often do you switch between renaming files and folders (or both)?
multiple times per session? or from one session to another?
I put all the name filters on a sep. option page because I didn't think people would change these options very often once they were set up.

- the inability to directly rename current folders, not to talk of files.

PF> As mentioned before you can drag individual or groups of files/folders into the preview list. the custom scanning will be automatically applied.

- the too noticeable flickering of the Detailed Info window whenever I make changes inside it

PF> I'll look into this but a list display refresh is always done after changing rows. This is a library function over which I have no control.

- the 'Detailed Info' window not scrollable on launch

PF> The list used to be the default focus until I added the close button; then the default focus became the close button. The next version will switch the default focus back to the list as this makes more sense since it isn't really a dialog window.

- and, of course, my limited knowledge of regex.

PF> awhile ago I added a summary page of regex commands on the web home page. There are also lots of resources on the web, plus example commands in the PFrank help pages and example commands that are directly insertable.

But the plus points faaaaaaaar outweigh these irksome bits. It's becoming more and more of
a pleasure to use PFrank. Thank you so much. And thanks for the growing forum too.

PF> Thanks for the suggested improvements!

There is a gift waiting for you at:

http://www3.telus.net/pfrank/PFrankSetup1.981.exe

Can't have any slow-downers in this product. Let me know what you think of the new-look name filter Smile

Peter.

So the new additions I could immediately spot are (for info's sake):

CTL-K or CTL-SPACEBAR, Custom Scan !--==Wow!==--!
CTL-R or CTL-SPACEBAR, Rename Files !--==Wow!==--!
Files/Folders Checkboxes on the Main page !--==Wow!==--!
Detailed Info window scrollable on launch !--==Wow!==--!

Hey, anyone need some renaming help? I'm running out of files to rename here!
Raring to go! Smile

If and when direct file/folder renaming is supported, I'd love to see
the 'Subfolders/Scan Subfolders' brought out of its hiding place too!

Always wantin' more!! Wink

Version 1.981 (beta).

Main window. The 'Ctl+Spacebar' hotkey doesn't
seem to really scan. It only brings out the last
scanned details, same as what Alt+D does. This
means that the
CTL-K or CTL-SPACEBAR, Custom Scan
description in the Help file is inaccurate. Wish
that it'd really custom scan.

However, in the Detailed Info window, it 'really'
renames the files.

Sorry - I can't reproduce this problem. Ctl-<spacebar>, if pressed while the main window is in focus, always performs a custom scan. Are you sure you changed your renaming parameters from the previous scan? Otherwise you would appear to get the same preview window.

Sure, I changed the parameters. 2-3 times, just to be sure. Still the last custom scan result's retained. WinXPSP2.

I've retested my copy of 1.981 and have no problems with the ctrl-spacebar.
Please send me your PFrank.log file (from the 'application data/Pfrank folder). Maybe some errors are showing up there. Also, after hitting teh space bar twice on the main window, save the summary into a file (Alt-S) and send that to me.

I've looked at the summary and it shows that the last 3 scans were identical.
Was that what you expected to see?

Again, I've tried to replicate the problem and all that I found was that if you haven't closed the editor when changing a row and you press Ctl-Spacebar or Ctrl-K, then you get a result using the previous entry value; but after that it's ok. If you close the editor first or use the mouse to scan, then the changes take effect immediately.
I've modified the program so that it closes the editor for you if you press a shortcut scan key. This will appear in 1.99.

Previously in this thread you mentioned the following:

- the too noticeable flickering of the Detailed Info window whenever I make changes inside it.

I know what caused this! It is a side-effect and a bug caused by the "Save Last Sorted Column" feature.
There was a bug in which the extra sorting took place after every list operation. This is now fixed but you will still see a flicker on the initial scan which could be annoying if you are renaming thousands of files.
Unfortunately I had this option enabled by default. Version 2.01 will disable by default (for new installs)
Since you already have PFrank installed, you'll have to disable this yourself in the options window. This is configurable under the options window -> General Display -> Save Last Sorted Column" checkbox.

Peter.
