I have just renamed a bunch of files on my NAS, by using Pfrank on the mapped drive. My OS is Vista x64.

After the renaming, the folders show up, but no longer the files.

When I access the NAS via the Web File Manager, the files are still there so they haven't been deleted.

It is, however, very unpractical to not be able to see the files in Vista.

Any suggestions?

My first inclination is that this is an o/s problem.

A few questions:
1)
were the files renamed?
2)
I don't have access to a Vista system at the moment but did you try to refresh the folder? On XP, under the View menu is a refresh option. Maybe Vista has the same thing.
3)
Are you using Vista service Pack 1?

At my workplace, we use a NAS as well (along with XP PC's). For awhile there was a problem where I would create a new file and it didn't show up in the folder. It was only when I refreshed the folder that it showed up. The problem mysteriously disappeared days later. Maybe this is a similar problem?
I have no trouble using PFrank to rename files located on a NAS (using XP).

Peter.

It may very well be an OS problem - but an Pfrank/OS/NAS problem. Normal file creation and renaming works without problem - without need of refreshing, that is.

I do not have XP so I cannot test if they can be seen by XP. My system is Vista SP1, yes.

The files were renamed (spaces replaced with underscores for use on a webpage).

I have tried refreshing, even rebooting but they do not show up.

It's not a big BIG problem as they are still there and they are for online use, but it makes working with the webpage somewhat more bothersome.

Via FTP I can copy the files to a folder of the PC harddrive and they are visible. However, if I copy them back and overwrite the files they redisappear. It may be a folder problem (the folders were renamed in the same go).

If I make a new folder and copy them to this, they show up.

Ok, I found out that Pfrank has changed the attributes to System, Hidden and Archive. Because of the System attribute, I don't know how to change it back.

OK - I got ahold of a Vista PC (Ultimate).
I accessed a NAS and renamed files/folders as admin and as a non-admin. None of the attributes of the files/folders changed.

I can't explain why they changed in your environment.

But you should be able to change the attributes back using PFrank since it has a file properties modifier mode. Here's what you do (asusming you are using version 2.23).

1)
On the main window, press Ctrl-P (or select File Properties mode from under the mode menu). This will change the mode to a mode where you can change the file/folder attributes.
2)
set up the current folder as you did before.
3)
press 'Scan'
4)
The preview window pops up but notice that the controls at the bottom are different. Choose to 'clear' the hidden attribute.
5)
Press 'Apply' on the preview window (make sure the text beside the button says 'Text box to all rows' (this label will be corrected in the next version as it should say 'To all Rows').

That should fix the settings. I tested setting and clearing the hidden attribute using the Vista PC plus NAS in my environment and it worked fine.

Hope this solves the problem.

Peter.

Thanks for your reply. However, it did not work because of the System attribute. I've read elsewhere that Vista does not let you change files with System attribute.

At the moment, I'm copying all my files via WinSCP from the NAS onto the mapped drive and for some reason this removes the System attribute (as well as the Archive and Hidden attributes). But there are so many files that it takes 1 day and 7 hours to complete Razz

Sorry - I had never heard of the System attribute.
After some follow up investigation I've now added support to set/clear it. I know it's too late for you but if you are interested, there is a beta at:

http://www3.telus.net/pfrank/PFrankSetupVista2.235.exe

With this version, the file properties mode lets you set/clear the system bit. I've tested it on XP and Vista and it seems to work.

Thanks for letting me know that the System attribute was causing the problem.

Peter.

You're welcome - and thanks for being so quick about an update. This means that I can actually use Pfrank in the future Smile
