Hi!

I have photo pairs named DCS_xxx.JPG and DCS_xxx.NEF. I'd like to rename them to %DateTimeOriginal%.JPG/NEF.
I understand that there is a way to apply the %DateTimeOriginal% information from the JPG to both the JPG and the NEF, by using the "grouping" feature?
However, I can't find info on how to find this grouping feature or how to apply it.

Help would be greatly appreciated!!!

A related question:I'd like to add a counter, as I often have several shots every minute and I don't have seconds in %DateTimeOriginal%. But, I'd like the corresponding JPG and NEF files to have the same counter. Is that possible, and how?

yours
Karin

Hi,

The grouping feature is activated by checking the following box on the the "image information insertion" panel of the options window:

"Insert the same Exif meta data for names with same prefix"

The following is from the on-line user guide:

===========================
The grouping feature allows meta-data information found from one file to be used in renaming other files that have the same filename prefix. Note that in order for this to work, the source of the meta data information must be the first one scanned in the group. This can only be done if the source file is alphabetically first. e.g. If you have the files 'abc.jpg' and 'abc.nef', then the grouping function will take the image information from the jpg file and insert it simultaneously into the abc.jpg and abc.nef filenames.

If the filenames were abc.crw and abc.jpg, then the grouping will not work because abc.jpg is alphabetically after abc.crw and will be scanned first. Since the .crw is scanned first and meta data cannot be read from the crw file, none of the files in the group will have any meta-data inserted into their filenames. One simple work-around for this case is to scan anyway, then resort the 'old names' in the preview list in reverse order. This should position all the .jpg files before the equivalent .crw files. Then press the rescan button and the grouping will work.
if resorting by column does not provide the desired order, then you can either resort manually or you could first rename the files that are the src of the meta-data to something with say .aaa extensions. Then run PFrank again using the grouping (in which case you can then also change the .aaa suffix back to the original suffix).
=====================

Unfortunately the help information above did not explicitly state which checkbox you have to select. I think I changed the terminology used on the GUI without updating the help pages. I'll fix that in the next release.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Peter.

Thanks for your answer!
I actually tried that before posting yesterday, but it didn't work - now I realized that it worked for files named *.JPG but not for *.jpg (lower case). The NEF-s were all uppercase extensions. I renamed the files so all had uppercase extensions, and then it worked.

A related question: I get many duplicates and would like to add a counter. However, I'd like the corresponding JPG and NEF-files to have the SAME counter. Is that possible?
Could I for example first rename the files from DSC_xxx.JPG/NEF to %DateTimeOrigin%.JPG/NEF, and in a second step add a counter to the JPG's, and in a third step copy that counter to the NEF's?

What I have right now:
Replace pattern:
*Insert Image Information before *All*
*Delete All Characters in *Position*14:36*of*Prefix
*Insert Counter after *Position*15*of*Prefix

sample:
DSC_0001.JPG -> 20101025_1214_001.JPG
DSC_0001.NEF -> 20101025_1214_002.NEF
- I'd like 20101025_1214_001.NEF

Again, thanks for helping!
Karin

The counter insertion options include a grouping checkbox. If you use that then the same counter will be used for the group.

Hi,
Now I'm having real troubles :0)

It seems as if the order in which I give the commands is very crucial.
As I load my renaming set, I get an empty "preview" line, even with a valid "sample name".

If I "Scan..." now, the scan continues endlessly without ever opening an information window.
-- is there a way to abort a running scan?

If I undo the grouping (untick both image information and counter boxes for inserting EXIF data to files with the same prefix), the preview line is as I expect, and I can scan.

If I then re-tick the grouping-box for "image information" and scans, things look fine. If I then re-group also for the counter, the scan continues endlessly again.

At one point I manged to get a scan when both image info and counter were grouped, but the counter information was then wrong: it grouped 0001.JPG with 0002.NEF, and so on.

I tried to do 2 grouping sequences at once and it failed for me too. It never went into an endless scan though.

To do what you want, you should be able to run 2 separate scans. One with the exif grouping, and then another scan with just the counter grouping.

Let me know the results.

Thanks,

Peter.
